Update: Widow of Martyr Killed
In February, we were praying for Mursal Siad’s family. Mursal was killed on December 8, 2012, by members of Al-Shabaab in Somalia because he followed Jesus. It is with heavy hearts we report that Mursal’s wife, 42-year-old Fartun, was hunted down and also killed.
On April 10, after hearing a rumor that gunmen were looking for her family, Fartun, her children, and a neighbor took a bus from Beledweyne, hoping to find shelter with relatives. But the bus was stopped at a roadblock and Al-Shabaab militants questioned the passengers one by one.
SUDAN: Christians Threatened and Deported
On April 21, a South Sudanese church elder was apprehended by officials from Khartoum’s National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS). They interrogated him for 4 hours. “They told me to reveal to them 12 names of Christians who are active in evangelism in Sudan, but I told them I have no idea,” the elder told Morning Star News.
NIGERIA: Gunmen kill 18 Christians
An attack on a Christian village in Mile Bakwai, about 37 miles south of Jos, left 18 believers dead and about 500 displaced from their homes.
Pastor James Mahwash lost five members of his church that night. “At about 8 p.m. the attackers, all Muslim Fulani herdsmen, came into this village in two separate groups, attacking us from two different directions, and shooting down anyone they saw.”

Convert jailed and tortured in Somalia
Pray for 25-year-old Hassan Gulled - we do not know if he is alive or dead. He was kidnapped by members of Al-Shabaab, a branch of al-Qaeda that operates in Somalia (their war flag is pictured below). According to Morning Star News, Al-Shabaab has been torturing him so he will deny Christ.
Believers in Egypt attacked during funeral
Reports are pouring in from Egypt - more anti-Christian violence.
Soldier kills Christian children in Nigeria
“Dear Jesus, please save me and mom,” 7-year-old Comfort prayed. A soldier from Nigeria's Special Task Force (STF) had just opened fire on her family. Her mother, Lyop, was wounded in the back, the shoulder, and the thigh. Comfort was shot in both legs. Her baby sister and little sister, Nancy, were dead. Her grandma was wounded too.
Christians under fire in Sudan
The jihad against the largest Christian community in SUDAN continues; believers hide in caves to escape constant air raids and bomb strikes initiated by President Omar al Bashir. Pray that God will provide “springs in the desert” for these believers and enable them to fully believe Jesus’s words, “Take heart, for I have overcome the world.”

Combating the spread of Islam in Africa
Lift up Pastor “Mbarra” in WEST AFRICA as he combats the spread of Islam and animism in his community by proclaiming God's Word, partly through equipping young pastors and evangelists and commissioning them to bring the Gospel to rural villages. Pray for protection for these harvest workers and ask God to bless the seeds they plant.
He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. - Colossians 1:28
Eva Abdullah - Released!
In case you missed it, we're still PRAISING THE LORD - Eva Abdullah is out of prison! On January 9, the High Court of TANZANIA ruled that Eva was not guilty of desecrating the Quran. The 17-yr-old girl spent 371 days in prison after leaving Islam to worship Jesus. Thank God for the faithful believers who have prayed and worked for her release and who are now taking care of her.
"My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding." - Colossians 2:2
Government in Kenya
KENYA: A Christian reports that, "The government is fearful; it does not know how to handle the Islamist drive, and thus has a tendency to give in easily to demands, sometimes at the expense of the churches."
Pray that believers will put their hope and trust firmly in the Lord of Heaven’s armies and not in the feeble governments and councils of men.
"Having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." - Colossians 2:15
Convert escapes
Pray for Mohamed Habi, a Christian in MALI. “I gave my life to Christ two years ago but all members of my family are Muslims, which is why my wife and daughter despise me. When the Islamists captured Timbuktu and began their search for Christians to kill, I escaped…”
Praise God for his escape; ask the Lord to provide for his needs.
"God has brought us into the kingdom of His Son, in whom we have redemption." - Colossians 1:13
Pray for Christians in Eritrea
ERITREA: The hideously cruel regime of President Isaias Afewerki may be crumbling! On Jan. 21, insurgents seized the state television building and broadcast a message that insisted Afewerki release thousands of political prisoners (many Christians) and return to a democratically elected government. The coup was brutally put down, but shows that the nation is not at peace with its Islamist leader.
Pray for God to establish justice in Eritrea for the sake of His persecuted Church!
Christian Refugees from Mali
A group of churches and missions in Bamako, MALI, are seeking to help 330 Christian refugee families who have fled persecution in the north. Pray for the refugees who are anxious because they don’t know if their family members are alive or dead.
He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. - Colossians 1:17
Student baptized, Church leaders arrested
Eman, a Muslim student from SUDAN’s Khartoum Applied College, secretly accepted the Lord two years ago. Recently she made a decision for baptism and was baptized by two church leaders. Authorities have arrested the leaders and charged them with baptizing a convert from Islam. Eman tried to flee the country but was caught by members of the Sudan Embassy in Ethiopia. At this time, her fate is unknown. Ask God to glorify Himself through the faithfulness of His children and work out these circumstances in a way that honors Christ.
Martyr in Somalia
On December 8, gunmen in SOMALIA murdered Mursal Siad after sending him threatening text messages. According to his oldest daughter, age 15, he was killed “because he failed to attend the mosque for prayers and used to pray at home. He used to share with us about Jesus.” Siad’s widow and five children have fled the area, fearing for their lives.
Pray for safety, provision, and healing for this traumatized family.
Christian fined for testimony
ALGERIA: One day at work a man asked Mohamed Ibaouene, “Is it true that you are a Christian?” He answered, “Yes, I am.” The man tried (and failed) to persuade Ibaouene to return to Islam. Months after the incident, Ibaouene was convicted of “pressuring a Muslim to convert." The court didn't even have Ibaouene appear to testify or give his side; he was tried 'in absentia.' He was notified through the mail that he was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 50,000 dinars ($635).
Faithful in Sudan
Brad Phillips, with Persecution Project Foundation, is engaged in relief efforts in SUDAN. He recently met Pastor “Kallo,” an evangelist in his 70’s who has been repeatedly imprisoned and tortured for his faith. His ministry was so effective the authorities were afraid to kill him, because they didn’t want to make him a martyr. And they could not keep him in jail, because he kept converting Muslims. Finally, they released him and sent him home!
Christians Flee Sharia Law
Last spring in MALI, groups linked to al-Qaida seized control of the northern half of the country and began imposing Sharia law on Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Many Christians fled the north, abandoning homes and churches that, according to Sharia, were later confiscated or destroyed. Today, jihadists training camps and munitions depots are proliferating and northern Mali ranks among the most dangerous places to openly worship Jesus.
Pray for God to halt the Islamization of this nation and frustrate the strategies of terrorist groups.
Outreach in West Africa continues
Our partner in WEST AFRICA reports that construction of his women’s vocational school is nearing completion. Women in his region are often viewed as second-class citizens, kept illiterate by their Muslim fathers and husbands. It will take courage for these Muslim-background women to enroll in the Christian-run vocational programs. Ask God to embolden and protect them. Ask Him also to give wisdom to the instructors as they also seek to share the Gospel.
“Let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord.” - Psalm 31:24
Official biased against Christians
Last month, Mohammed Ibrahim was appointed to lead EGYPT’s Interior Ministry – which means he is now in charge of the police force. He previously was overseeing prison affairs. Christians suspect his loyalties lie with the Muslim Brotherhood and fear he will use his new position to further harass and persecute them. Pray that he will not abuse his authority, and if he does, that God will remove him from office and replace him with someone who acts justly.
“Make Your face shine on Your servants.” - Psalm 31:16
Aftermath in Nigeria
Six Christians in Borno state, NIGERIA, were slain at First Baptist Church in Maiduguri on Christmas Eve. There was also an attack on an evangelical church in Yobe state; gunmen killed Pastor Yohana Sini, 50, and five other members of his church. The Islamic supremist group Boko Haram is strongly suspected in both massacres.
Anger. Desire for revenge. Fear. Hopelessness. Apostasy.
Christian Women and Children bombed in Sudan
The day after Christmas (Dec 26, 2012), Islamist-ruled north SUDAN dropped nine bombs on a Christian village in the Nuba mountains, killing two Christian women – 70-year-old Kuku Tia and 45-year-old Aisha Tolodi. The blast also killed two little girls - Rehab Alfol, 8 and her 4-year-old sister, Najaha.
Pastor shot in face and shoulder
On Christmas day in Zanzibar, TANZANIA, the Rev. Ambrose Mkenda was shot in the face and the shoulder by a suspected member of the Association for Islamic Mobilization and Propagation. The group, which calls itself “Uamsho“ (Awakening) had distributed leaflets that said “We now want the heads of all the church pastors in Zanzibar;" area Christians say that many pastors have left their churches out of fear. Praise God for Rev. Mkenda’s courage and ask God to heal his wounds and strengthen the church in this hostile country.
Christians Targeted in Massacre
On the night of December 21, Islamic militants entered Musari village, NIGERIA, seeking Christians. They gathered 15 believers, tied their hands, and slit their throats. The military then removed the bodies and claimed only five people were killed, contradicting eye-witness reports. Brothers and sisters, we must intercede for the survivors; they are hemmed in on every side and greatly need the Spirit to minister to their hearts.
