Sudan: Young Men's and Women's Christian Academy
Smyrna has an exciting opportunity to come alongside the Young Men's and Women's Christian Academy in Sudan. In a town flooded with refugees from Darfur, many of whom have endured unutterable terrors at the hands of gangs, militant groups, and especially the government-backed janjaweed, this school is the vision of a local Sudanese pastor seeking to share Christ with his people.
Using stick and thatch shelters for classrooms, the school has provided education for hundreds of children, including many orphans. Students learn Bible, English, math, social studies, health, and regional history. A well has been drilled on site to give clean drinking water. When he has the resources, the pastor provides the children with hot lunches as well. His vision is to build a permanent school and dormitory, to provide room and board as well as education for orphans -- to give them a home.
With political and economic conditions worsening again in the Darfur region, more suffering children are expected in the refugee camp. The need is enormous -- yet even a small contribution can have an impact far outweighing its size. Just $30 will provide a child with hot lunches for a month. Will you open your heart to them?
