Sudan: Mercy Flights, Well-Digging

Sudan has experienced sorrow, pain, trauma, heartache, dust storms, scorching sand, periodic drought, disease, AIDS, inadequate supplies of portable water, and years of political and military volatility.

As conflict has raged back and forth across the desert sands over many years, millions have died and more millions have been made homeless. In this hopeless situation, Christ remains the only answer. Smyrna Ministries International supports a ministry partner in bringing the fragrance of Christ to this devastated Islamic region through

  • Giving food and medical relief to the sick and starving
  • Drilling wells to provide fresh water for multitudes
  • Providing tarps and plastic sheeting for shelter from the blazing sun and drenching rains
  • Distributing Bibles and Christian literature to thousands
  • Supporting a radio ministry that proclaims the Good News of the Savior as well as educating the people about issues related to health and agriculture. Solar-powered radios make it possible for people to hear the gospel on the region’s only Christian radio station.

Most of us take these basic life necessities for granted. The people in Sudan do not. Decades of continuous warfare have ravaged their homeland. They are victims of an Islamic conquest that has left millions murdered and displaced. Christians have been enslaved, raped, systematically starved, bombed, and even crucified. Parents watch their children die of hunger, knowing that converting to Islam would save them. These are people who know brutality and fear, bullet wounds and ghastly burns, deathly disease and malnourished orphans. Their villages are potential killing fields. Any day, their fate could be the horrific slave market, or a brutal death. Yet emerging from this horror is a growing, vibrant church composed of Christians whose faith is pure gold tested in fire.

Many of these Christians are prime targets for bombing, and therefore the skies above them are restricted no-fly zones where other humanitarian agencies dare not go. Yet when our brothers and sisters are on the brink of death, danger cannot stop us. Mercy flights head straight into no-fly zones and potential massacre sites each year, delivering life-saving supplies to people who are precious to God.
