Status of the Persecuted Church in Egypt
January 15, 2010
Muslim Population: 90% (Christian Population: 10%)

A Christian girl in Egypt writes, “We are treated very badly…. We are imprisoned in our own home because Muslim clerics called for the murder of my father.” The constitution of Egypt promises freedom of belief but gives no provision for freedom of practice. Under this double standard the country escapes international censure but still disbands churches and harasses believers. Christian converts are refused identification documents, their marriages are not legally recognized, and there have been cases where birth certificates have been refused. One man has been fighting for two years to get a national I.D. card that registers him as a Christian. Without identification he cannot find employment.

Additionally, Muslim converts often face intense persecution from their own families. A young woman who chose to follow Christ was treated with insults and death threats, both from her family and the police. Finally, she decided to leave the country. At the airport, she discovered she had been banned from leaving. Police arrested her, tortured her, and sexually assaulted her. They even starved her children to pressure her to return to Islam. When the case finally went to court, the judge told her, “If I had a knife now, I would kill you.” Police normally decline to prosecute Muslim attackers and will not defend Christians.

Young Christian girls increasingly are kidnapped by Muslim men, raped, “married” to their attackers, and forced to convert to Islam. A local pastor reports, “Such abuse remains covered in a cloak of silence and tacit acceptance, even though it is against the constitutional affirmation of civil rights.”

Prayers for persecuted Christians in Egypt

May 11, 2012

Christians in EGYPT are concerned as presidential elections scheduled for May 23-24 approach. The Muslim Brotherhood says that the people of Egypt want an Islamic state.

Our ministry partner requests prayer for the salvation of those in the Muslim Brotherhood. Our partner also prays that the schemes of Islamic groups seeking to seize control would be defeated.

Mob Prevents Court Appeal

May 5, 2012

UPDATE: On March 16 in EGYPT, a mob of Muslim lawyers prevented defense lawyers from entering the court to appeal their Christian client’s six-year prison sentence for allegedly insulting Muhammad. The Muslims also assaulted the accused believer.

Ask God to strengthen the Christians and rescue the accused. “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

Today, we're praying for our Christian brothers and sisters in Egypt. We're praying specifically for the people involved in these recent news stories:

Christians Face Injustice in Egypt

April 27, 2012

Christians in EGYPT face continued injustice. After believers were falsely accused of a kidnapping, thousands of Muslims tried to burn a church and kill its pastor. Elsewhere Muslims reportedly tried to kill a Christian accused of insulting Mohammed and got him sentenced to six years in prison. Also, a pastor whose church was destroyed by Muslims was sentenced to six months in prison for a minor construction violation.

Ask God to give Christians His strength. “It is You, O Lord my God, who will answer.”

Ministry Shares Hope

April 8, 2012

Our ministry partner in EGYPT describes the chaos and despair Egyptians are facing. Several youth from his church were killed in recent violence. Nevertheless, he says that the hopeless are finding hope in Christ.

Praise God that the response to his media ministry is increasing! “Be still, and know that I am God.”

A Reason for Hope

Praying in Church Forbidden

March 29, 2012

In January members of the Muslim Brotherhood entered a church in EGYPT and declared that it has no license and that no one should pray in it. A Muslim reportedly said that the site would be suitable for a mosque and a hospital.

Pray that the congregation will not give up meeting together. Ask God to use it to shine the light of the gospel in the Muslim community. “For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light do we see light.”

Opposition against Churches in Egypt

March 29, 2012

Muslim’s opposition against the church in today’s prayer request was reported by the Assyrian International News Agency (AINA) and later by Assist News. AINA writes,

Father and Son Murdered

March 23, 2012

A Christian man and his son were shot to death in EGYPT for refusing to pay extortion money to a Muslim and his accomplices. The Muslim frequently extorts money from Christians and kidnaps their children for ransom.

Ask God to comfort the grieving family. “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
