Blankets for Bangladesh

As the monsoons pass and the floods recede, the turning seasons bring the approach of winter.  Impoverished families, without a home or even a coat to share between them, seek shelter from the cold nights.  As darkness falls and the temperature plummets, they huddle together, trying to eke some warmth.  With no food to give them, the mother prays her children will live to see another chilly winter sunrise.

Bangladesh is the seventh most populous country in the world -- and nearly half its 140 million people live below the poverty line.  Infant malnutrition is the highest in the world.  These numbers may be even higher for Bangladeshi Christians.  Muslim employers refuse to hire them.  Thousands of families have been chased out of their villages after converting to Christianity.  Those who were blessed to own a house are left with only the clothes on their backs.

Few of these brothers and sisters have coats, or even a sheet to wrap themselves in during the night.  Each year hundreds of people in Bangladesh die from a combination of hunger and cold.

Just $15 provides a blanket large enough to warm an entire family.

They have lost their jobs, been driven from their homes, and are unable to provide even the most basic necessities for their families. They continually face the threat of murder and rape from Islamic terrorists.

The cold of winter leaves many dead from malnourishment and inadequate clothing. Families huddle in the frigid temperatures without even a sheet to help ward off the cold. In their hearts, they hold fast the promises of God while their bodies suffer.

Although brief, the winters in Bangladesh are bitterly cold. Millions do not have housing and few own a coat. They are left without any protection against the penetrating cold of the winter months.

The highly persecuted Christian population, who constitute less than 1% of the Muslim-majority population, face particular difficulty. Choosing to follow Jesus means enduring continual discrimination and risking brutal attacks. Christian families are chased from the villages with only the clothing on their backs. Each November, as they watch winter approach, they realize anew just how much they have given up to follow the Lord.

This tragedy presents a unique opportunity for the Church around the World to share the love of Christ with their persecuted brothers and sisters, as well as reaching out to the Muslims who perpetrate such persecution. Through the SHARE Fund, you can give a blanket to a child for only $12. A gift of $15 will provide a blanket large enough to shelter an entire family through the cold winter months.

Sending a “blanket of love” to Bangladesh is an act of service to Jesus, who was born in a stable, and as a man had nowhere to lay His head. He understands the suffering of the children in Bangladesh — and He opens a way for us to love them in His name.
